The trees can really mess you up; I know it only too well.

This is a detail from the photo I took early this morning.

I had not really thought about it, but I realized that I was a bit surprised that you can get shots with that much detail of the moon..

Very cool hobby- astrophotography (a term I just learnt!)

I took my original photo and I cropped it down into this shape! I almost literally cut the original moon photo into 2 pieces.

I don't have the equipment or the knowledge that would enable me to get such a photo directly.

I did this, because as I was looking at the whole image, I realized that this part was more interesting than the rest. And I wondered how it would look in this form. So, I cropped it and here we are!

I'm very pleased that you like it! I am very happy with my results.

But I am not even an amateur photographer. I am impressed with how much cameras have improved -that you can get a shot with this much detail without ..

Astrophotography sounds like an interesting hobby. I have never tried to use my own phone for astrophotography, though I get decent shots of backyard wildlife with it. Though it sounds like with the IPhone 14 one can get cool shots by maximising the zoom and then as you did cropping out regions of interest after.

Very cool .

I did not use my iPhone for the original shot.

I have an Olympus 4/3 camera--The Olympus E-M10 Mark IV. It's not a big camera but it gets great photos.

And my lens for moon photos is my 100-400 mm lens. It's heavy and I use a tripod for image stability and to make it easier on me to get the photos I want.

That is how I do it! I should have mentioned my gear earlier.

I suppose that was the original question in my mind. I know that phone cameras have been getting better, but I wasn’t clear on just how good they are or what the requirements are for decent enough shots of the night sky (going purely by cursory visual scans). There has to be a professional definition of how astrophotography is judged quality wise whether it is on the amateur end of the spectrum or the expert end.

I had been under the impression over the years that you have actual photography gear like most of the other posters in this forum, but when you didn’t mention it I wondered if this was taken with the IPhone or Google Pixel or the Samsung model (mentioning em all as homage to Lina Khan -that is being about as anti-monopoly as one can be right😸? As far as I know there are no small phone makers).
