Late Friday afternoon, I fell hard in our powder room, against the toilet bowl. It knocked me so hard that I couldn't breathe for a few seconds. And then, due to the tight space, I couldn't get up. We called the paramedics and they did a 'courtesy lift.'
Nothing's broken but the pain has been pretty bad. Muscle spasms, which I've never had before, are the worst. I am in touch with my doctor who basically agreed with my plan for care. The medications, and other treatments are helping to some extent. It's been tough. Going anywhere and walking around are difficult.
So I'm taking it easy and that means no market. I'm really sorry. And all of this could have been avoided if only I hadn't been in a hurry! Oh well. I will heal. Life will go on.
On edit: I've been reading and re-reading all of your beautiful, loving and supportive posts! My heart is full. You are my DU family and DU is my electronic home. It's hard for me to answer everyone, so this group message will have to do.
I love you all! And thank you all for standing by me.

(465 posts)... of that powder room and the bathroom and the bathtub. It's a very cheap investment considering that a slip and fall accident may easily result in a broken hip or some other serious musculoskeletal injuries to your body. A broken hip would be horrifically disabling, perhaps even permanently so to some degree, even with surgical intervention to repair it. Non-slip mats go along way towards prevention of such falls. Invest in them. You will not regret it.

(25,517 posts)That awful moment when you know you are going down but there is nothing you can do to stop it. So glad nothing got broken.
You probably have some colorful bruises that might make for interesting photographic subjects. (Sorry for the weak attempt at humor.)
I hope you heal quickly.

(4,873 posts)I'm so sorry for your injury and the indignity of it all. I fell last week on the steps up to our house and couldn't get up due to hand surgery. We'd have had to call for the paramedics, too, if the handyman hadn't been around to pretty much carry me into the house. I hope your aches and bruises and mostly your amour-propre recover quickly.
But one might also view this as a message from Glob Herself: Lay off the flora porn. Maybe this little break will be all you need to get your sexual priorities straight and limited to fauna. I have asked Mike Johnson to be your porn monitor, but he seemed confused when I told him it involved flowers, fruit, and (worst of all) vegetables.
(PS I do hope you'll be right as rain and back to posting your vegetative filth as soon as possible. )

(52,546 posts)but I'm so sorry you're having muscle spasms and a lot of pain.
I don't know if you take vitamins at all or are willing to take any, but I've found that upping my vitamin C intake can help with reducing inflammation and pain and bruising (helps with the bruising at least if started immediately; I had a hard fall on my left knee after tripping on a curb a few weeks ago and the knee was turning light blue and quite swollen soon, but the light blue color was almost completely gone by the next day when I was expecting it to be purple and yellow, and much of the swelling was gone).
Hoping you're completely recovered soon...

(24,194 posts)a temporary bed, and viola, you'll be relatively close to everything (hopefully), get yourself plenty of heating pads and/or ice packs (ice packs if you need more of different sizes, put washrags into baggies, and freeze). Hopefully you have a little walker or cane that perhaps can help you too.
My prayers and such are on high alert for you! Get well, stay off your feet, and enjoy PBS or videos/recordings that you enjoy, and before you know it, you'll be out there on the prowl again at the local market!

(27 posts)Peggy, I am so sorry about your fall. At the end of July, I fell at a friend's house while working on a fundraiser. I tripped on a door's threshold and flew across the deck. There were 2 doctors there, I was able to get up luckily, as I fell face forward. That was about the only time in my life I was thankful for having a large bust. After two weeks I finally went to the doctor because I was still having spasms in my upper back and having to sleep in a recliner as sleeping flat causes the spasms to come back. I am going to a chiropractor this afternoon hopefully this will help if not then to an excellent acupuncturist. Medicare and my insurance do not cover massage therapy which would be the best thing for this problem. The medicine I am using is having too many side effects. As we age we may be able to move around fast but falling can be rather painful and long-lasting. We both were lucky not to break anything. I will pray for your speedy recovery. Ms. Pamela

(14,597 posts)I'm now at an age where broken hips and dislocated shoulders are far too common. I fell yesterday while helping my daughter in her yard and fortunately was not injured.
This reminds me of my days working field service in heavy industry. We were required to have frequent safety classes as refreshers and it took me years to finally appreciate how important that was for reducing the effects of one of our worst enemies - human complacency.
You'll be in my thoughts for a speedy recovery and thanks again for the kind reminder to slow down and watch my every step.
