Related: About this forumany nikon Z (mirrorless) shooters here, other than usonian and me?
if so, what are you shooting with and which lenses? what do you love about the platform and what gripes do you have?
the Z8 is amazing to look thru and shoot with but i have issues with:
1. spot metering. it can malfunction and not meter from the focus point and also while using it (i use manual shutter and aperture with auto ISO) sometimes the camera somehow sets the ISO way too high and the EVF shows a completely overblown scene and locks it in and no matter how much you aim at a completely dark scene, it won't lower the ISO.
2. AF. with f mount glass and the FTZ, i get way more missed focus shots using animal eye detection AF than i get keepers. not sure why....but it's usually front focused by a small amount...i think a strand of hair that hangs in front of the animal's eye can do this. i need to get a Z telephoto lens to see if the problem is still there....my guess is that it will be, as i hear similar complaints from other Z users.
i'm hoping a firmware update can fix both of these issues.

I have had trouble with the ISO as you mention and usually get a good shot anyway but not exactly what I want.

(9,369 posts)I found the Z8 out of the box to be "hot", overexposed. I also shoot manual and auto ISO, and no matter what I did, as you say, the camera would just run the ISO up, very frustrating. I settled on -.3EV and have been satisfied, assuming I didn't change anything else I've forgotten about.(-.7 was way too much)
I used the FTZ with the F 200-500 and was not impressed with focus speed and accuracy. Very satisfied with the Z 180-600, even with the TC2 which I never take off. I have been locked into aircraft photography for the past year, using the aircraft focus function, and now that I have almost recuperated/reconstructed my garden after two hurricanes, and the weather is much cooler I'll be trying the animal focus function soon.
