Bit of trivia. It was the first show with a single, female lead. She was initially going to be a divorcee but they were concerned people would think she’d divorced Robert Petri (Dick Van Dyke Show) so they decided to go with a broken engagement.

Worked temp jobs while waiting for her big break as an actress. Had a father who hovered over her. Mary was a successful career woman living without parental supervision.

I think they were both very classy as well. The characters lived in what was for the time very modern homes, dressed very nicely, and were themselves quite sophisticated. With The Mary Tyler Moore Show, specifically, you had a depiction of a young professional woman who was doing quite well on her own, thank you.

mouth along with the dialogue in most MTM shows. I wanted to BE Mary Richards back then!

Fave episode... I have several ... one of them is when Rhoda pays back a loan to Mary in the form of a down payment on a new yellow sports car (“the color of Ticonderoga pencils!”) “The car you love in the color you hate is yours!” says Rhoda, handing Mary the keys. As shy mechanic Craig T. Nelson peeks in from the shop....

I know, I need to get a life!
