Absolutely agree with you on both your points. I would highly recommend the series but I've not yet seen the follow up film.

I don't know how a fine actor like Idris Elba allowed himself to be dragged into that hot mess.

I love Idris and was psyched to see him as Roland and Matthew McConnehey as Flagg but… they tried to jam random bits from the entire series of 7 looong books into one movie, made the kid the central character in order to make the definitely R rated source material into a PG13 movie for teenagers, and totally removed three extremely important characters, among numerous other disastrous changes to that epic story. Ugh.

I often wonder why those two fine actors decided to be involved in that mess.
