Ive been sick this week with stomach flu, which has not been pleasant, but it has at least allowed me to catch up on my long list of things to watch.
Ive been bingeing Strange New Worlds season 1 since yesterday, and I cant quite believe how this show is just nailing it over and over again! What a blast!
Id heard it was good but it really does live up to its reputation. Im not a *huge* Trekkie, but Ive watched plenty. I really tried to enjoy Discovery, but it was a struggle and I dropped off at the end of the third season. I thought Picard season 1 was garbage and I didnt watch season 2, although Im glad I came back for the TNG reunion in season 3.
But SNW is just spot on in its vibe. The episodic storytelling suits it well, and it has plenty of humor. Im on the episode where theyre stuck in a nebula and they all think theyre in a fairytale. What a hoot.
My dad was an OG Star Trek fan back in the 60s, but I dont think hes watched any since TOS. I might recommend this to him, though, I think hed get a kick out of it.

(3,551 posts)I actually ordered Paramount Plus after watching S1E1 (free on YouTube).
Wish there were a few more episodes though, I already binge-watched them all lol.
Really well done, much better than the other spin-offs.

(8,079 posts)Some of the characters like Pike and Spock were part of the Star Trek discovery series.
Anson Mount is an excellent Captain Pike.

(31,808 posts)IMO Paramount/CBS put their best people on this. We often credit directors and writers, and they're very important, but it's the supervising and production producers from which quality filters down.
Producers also write. The good ones push the envelope, doing the best to avoid cliches and banality.
Best part of Strange New Worlds (Season 1): Individual episodes! No filler material to extend a single plot line across 8-10 episodes.
I'll start season two as soon as all episodes are released.
