I always think this is like cheating on your employer to appear on a competitor's show on another channel.

Meaning that when the bus-driver takes a day off he goes on a trip and someone else is driving the bus.

So these late-night talk show hosts go on each other's shows frequently, especially when they want to promote a book or a show, whatever. A couple weeks ago Seth Meyers took a week off his own show and went around to other shows (Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, etc.) and talked up his new Peacock podcast. I'm sure NBC set up the promotional visits as part of the deal.
