Which gives me some hope. The deaths are high for a lower number of cases, which also makes sense if deaths are lagging. Could also be from people home testing, but I'm not so sure that is statistically significant.

New York's infection rates soared to over 20,000 per day, but with a relatively low death rate of 30-50 per day.

Then the infection rate started to drop, but the death rate soared up to around 150 per day.

Finally the infection rates continue to drop, we're at under 5,000 per day again, and death rates are at 80 or fewer per day.

Death rates lag significantly over time. When both the infection rate and death rate start dropping together, you know the worst is over, but that's still no reason to let your guard down. Without proper protection and safety measures, the entire process starts anew.
