Arizona Supreme Court changes lawyer complaint rules before 2024 election

The Arizona Supreme Court has granted a request to change the rules about who can submit a State Bar complaint — at least temporarily.

A top state court administrator advocated for the rule change that adds a step before some bar complaints against Arizona attorneys are investigated and restricts access to information divulged during those investigations.

Dave Byers, director of the Administrative Office of the Courts, said he submitted the rule change petition in response to an "explosion of complaints" filed by people not directly connected to the underlying events.

Byers said he had seen an increase in the number of complaints filed regarding election cases. He estimated at least 40 elections-related cases were submitted from November 2020 to May of this year.
