'So disingenuous': AZ election officials rebuff GOP overture to monitor drop boxes, voters
Conservative activists plan to monitor ballot drop boxes for the November election, and to identify people who they believe are illegal voters all reportedly in the name of quelling skepticism from right-leaning voters.
The plan was outlined in broad strokes in a letter sent two weeks ago to Secretary of State Adrian Fontes and Attorney General Kris Mayes. It invited them to join the Conservative Political Action Conference to discuss these plans and set guidelines for drop box use.
But there apparently has not been any meeting of the minds. The letter received a frosty reception from the state officials, both Democrats. They said the letter was not sent in good faith, noting it's been conservatives such as CPAC that have fueled skepticism about the integrity of U.S. elections.
"To come out and pretend like you recognize the problem and that you want to help is so disingenuous when you're a part of the problem," said Aaron Thacker, communications director for the secretary of state. "They need to lead with a mea culpa, not pointing fingers."
