'There's a place for you': Harris campaign reaches out to Latter-day Saints in Arizona

Arizona members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints made the case for Vice President Kamala Harris on Thursday, breaking with tradition to support the Democratic nominee over former GOP President Donald Trump.

“I feel very strongly that I need to tell people that it is OK — and I would say more than OK — great, to be a person of faith and be supporting Vice President Harris,” said Claudia Walters, the former vice mayor of Mesa. “It was hard to step out of my peaceful sanctuary and start having tough political conversations again, but we have to.”

Walters is a co-chair of the new Latter-day Saints for Harris-Walz Advisory Committee, which launched Thursday to increase Harris’ outreach to current and former members of the church. Nearly a half-million Arizonans are members of the Latter-day Saints church, widely known as the Mormon church. That group of 450,000 people makes up roughly 6% of the state population.

“This election is going to be the closest of our lifetime here in Arizona. And so we have a message for members of our church here in Arizona: There's a place for you in our campaign,” said committee co-chair Joel John, a former state representative.
