University of Central Arkansas suspends Kappa Sigma fraternity chapter
CONWAY, Ark.The University of Central Arkansas has suspended the Kappa Sigma fraternity for one year for hazing pledges, including spraying them with cold water, putting them through grueling physical workouts and not allowing them to leave the fraternity house.
The university decided to suspend the fraternity after learning about the hazing and other questionable behavior this fall, including that the chapter gave out an award for excessive drinking, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported. Students also described other forms of hazing that fraternity brothers engaged in, including blindfolding and demeaning pledges.
A report sent to the dean of students last month includes an account from a Kappa Sigma pledge who said he witnessed a "potential sexual assault" by a fraternity member on a woman who seemed unable to give her consent.
The pledge allegedly said he wouldn't report it because older fraternity members warned him to stay quiet until after he was initiated, the report stated.
