Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R) announced that she will nominate J. Cody Hilland as the next justice for the state Supreme Court, adding that his appointment would give the court a conservative majority for the first time ever.
I am pleased to announce that I have selected another former prosecutor and a U.S. Attorney Cody Hyland for this role, she announced Monday at the Arkansas State Capitol. Cody brings a lifetime of legal experience to the job from his early days as a staff attorney in state government and an aide to my dad, who was also here today. He made service to Arkansas the centerpiece of his career.
Hilland was nominated by former President Trump in 2017 to be the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas and was confirmed by the Senate in September 2017. He later resigned from the role on December 31, 2020 and then became the chief legal counsel for the Arkansas Department of Public Safety before stepping down to work for Sanders gubernatorial campaign, the governor said.
Cody comes from the same mold as some of the finest jurors we have in the country today, Sanders said. The same legal minds who are finally bringing back strict originalism to our courts. This is the first time Arkansas Supreme Court will have a conservative majority. And I know it will have the same effect on our state as it has had on our country.

(25,956 posts)All just big power grabs they are taking opportunisticallly.
There should be some remedy for this, when it all comes crashing down around them including 3 USSC justices.
Dems really have been operating in a separate universe.

(38,358 posts)Our side? Biden says expanding the court would be too political.
Asked by host Nicolle Wallace about expanding the court, Biden said, "I think if we start the process of trying to expand the court, we're going to politicize it maybe forever in a way that is not healthy.".
Granted it's all moot now but couldn't he have said, "Get out the vote & give democrats the majorities we need to do it & we will." They're sure gonna do it as soon as they can & until then, they still hold the court on most issues.

(4,381 posts)Sarah Huckabee Sanders may actually out-do Brownback in how badly she can screw her state. It's been years, and we're still digging out, thanks to a R legislature that tries to veto everything the democratic governor does. But the worst for us was when Brownback was in office, and had all his toadies as advisors, on the legislature and in the courts. We were demolished at that point. The Koch brothers did well, tho... as did the other huge moneyed and theocratic interests. The rest of us were pushed down until we couldn't get any lower.
Arkansas is about to discover what we went through. Hopefully they won't take as long as we did to say "No More." Until then, watch Arkansas devolve into a fascist, theocratic state run by an idiot. It will probably rival Florida and Texas for its stupidity and hate. But theocracy will reign supreme there. That's how Sarah was raised, and her father is still the power behind the throne, IMNSHO.
My daughter is SO glad she moved out of the state, even if she did just move to KS. (I, OTOH, love her being here with me!)
