I'm from Wisconsin.

I'm staying with a sister close to Nevada City, this is the most liberal town I've seen in a long time.

The people are so friendly, have had no gripes.

And the landscapes!
I've seen so many hills!

California is a highly varied state, make no mistake about it.

There are non-liberal towns, especially in the northern, inland areas. And there are super liberal areas along the coast, which is so gorgeous in its own right.

I hope you can visit other places to get a really good feel for the state. And if not, perhaps another trip will accomplish that.

In the meantime, have a blast!

2. I have a resraurant recomendation

The Pine Street Cafe. I think there's one in Grass Valley also, which is the one I have gone to.
I'm in Southern Cal. and I love that area.

Downtown Grass Valley is also fun but not quite as pretty as Nevada City, an historic jewel in the gold country.

11. I moved from Silicon Valley to lake County in '91.

Lake County was solid red when I moved here. I've watched it turn blue over the past 30 years. I mainly think it's simply age demographics. The baby boomers are retiring and moving here. The cost of living here is cheap for California, and a Silicon Valley retiree typically has enough equity in the house they are selling to buy one twice the size here for cash. Being an affordable County, we get lots of blue collar people, many of the former union members and Democrats. Also seeing younger work-from-home city refugees moving here, too.

That's my opinion from my less than scientific sampling, anyway.

12. First the Gold Country was hippie heaven late 60s then the So. Cal retirees moved in 70s

conservative, then this latest wave of as you said, boomers, have been moving in for the last 10 years.

I haven't lived here all those years, but know lots of the locals and love to hear their stories.

14. AcK! IMHO it's the worst!

Hot, dry, it's been months since we had rain, everything's dry and dead, high fire probability - no thanks. April through June is the best time, when the hills are still green and the wildflowers are blooming.

I'm in the Bay Area: California is full of micro-climates.

15. I don't know the Bay Area seasons, but here in San Diego, it's May Gray and June Gloom if you're

on the coast, and visitors like the coast. Inland is nice in the spring, but I like dry temps and low humidity which brings clear blue sky, warm days and cool nights, which is why I like October best. To each their own.

I know what you mean about hills, I was constantly surrounded by hills. I lived in a valley, I drove through valleys, there were always hills around me.

When I moved to Florida the first thing that hit me (after the humidity) was how FLAT it is here. No hills, anywhere. I don't miss the expensive housing, the horrible traffic, the crowded parking lots & stores, the freezing ocean, the high taxes etc, but I do miss the hills, & being able to go to Lake Tahoe & the Sierra-Nevada mountains on the weekends.

to frame the view day to day, I've driven through flat land but never lived in it.

But yes we have MAGATS and anti-Vaxxers, but they have been outnumbered for a while, Nevada county voted for Hillary in 2016 and Biden in 2020.

10. Interesting- a narrow strip of blue surrounded by deep red counties

My evangelical cousins and their extended families, about two dozen adults and children, recently moved from Nevada and Placer counties to Tennessee to “live in a more conservative community”.

One cousin and her family remained; they are all antivaxer Trumpers.

Any idea what has caused Nevada county’s shift from red to blue?

began retiring, things began to shift.
