*Mandatory indoor mask mandate goes into effect on Wed. Dec. 15
*Mandate to last a month until Jan. 15, with health officials citing an increase in COVID-19 cases since
Thanksgiving
*Events with more than 1,000 people: attendees will need proof of vaccination or a negative test taken
within 24 hours (tightened from 72 hours)
"Citing a sharp increase in COVID-19 infection rates since Thanksgiving, the state announced Monday that beginning Wednesday, mask- wearing will become mandatory in all indoor public settings across California regardless of vaccination status.
"The mask mandate, mirroring a requirement already in effect in Los Angeles County and select other counties across the state, will remain in place until Jan. 15.
"The state will also toughen the restriction for unvaccinated people who attend indoor "mega-events" of 1,000 people or more, requiring them to receive a negative COVID test within one day of the event if it's a rapid antigen test or within two days for a PCR test. The current rules require a test within 72 hours of the event.

(222,361 posts)We had a mandatory mask mandate here in New York for over a year - until it was rescinded back in July, just in time for "tourist season" here. *sigh* And the signs on entrances said that it was "the honor system," the unvaccnated were still required to wear masks. Good luck with that.
But the mask mandate was reinstated by the governor as of today, stopped at two stores in my travels today and the signs are back up, face coverings are required to enter stores (and any business). But when I stopped at a small grocery on my way home to pick up a few necessities, I noticed two women checking out ahead of me, no masks in place. It was late and we were likely the only ones in the store. Who is expected to enforce this, the checkout lady??

(52,276 posts)While inside large stores stores I have noticed about half of the customers are maskless. The audio on speakers tells everyone that staff is required to mask up (hopefully that will keep some people from attacking them, verbally or physically). Today's announcement is certainly a relief to many. Of course the anti-maskers will continue with their BS as they have for over a year.
