WASHINGTON The process wasnt always pretty, but Californias redistricting commission has finalized its new map of the states congressional districts, largely sparing the Bay Area of major changes and overall favoring Democrats in the state.
The political boundaries that will dictate representation for the next 10 years will be officially transmitted to the secretary of state by the Dec. 27 deadline, paving the way for candidates to make final decisions about their futures by the March 11 filing deadline. The commission voted unanimously to approve its maps late Monday night.

Overall, outside experts analyze the map as favorable to Democrats. Several swing Democratic seats now lean more left, based on voting data, including the one represented by Rep. Josh Harder, D-Turlock (Stanislaus County), whose district shifted several times over the weeks of drawing as the commission grappled with how to draw San Joaquin County. Many close Republican-held seats also will swing left, including those of Reps. David Valadao of Hanford (Kings County) and Mike Garcia of Santa Clarita (Los Angeles County). Redistricting expert Paul Mitchell predicts the map favors 43 Democrats and nine Republicans. The current split is 42-11.

(47,487 posts)Good news, indeed. Could be one net gain for the Dems.
I had heard Dems were getting ready to gerrymander New York. If they get another few seats, we could be in good shape.

(2,195 posts)it would be Foolish for another Party not to do it in a State they Control.
Especially, since the USSC and Congress have given a green light to
gerrymandering and not put a stop to it and R States with their
Voter Suppression tactics.

(3,553 posts)The "independent commission" took away our neighboring North County cities and added some in South County.
North and South are not homogeneous. Hasn't looked like this in decades. Upset, nah, really pissed.

(31,804 posts)CA-23 gerrymandered district stays just as gerrymandered as the "new" CA-30, even more so, in fact, solidifying Republican Kevin McCarthy's hold.

(3,286 posts)parties shouldn't EVER be able to take a district for granted. Having a district solidly locked in to the point that the primary is the only race that matters ensures eventual corruption and taking the voters for granted.
It can't happen in CA with the paucity of viable republicans, but power corrupts. EVERY politician at every office should always be worried about their next 'job review'.
