Chula Vista says Republic Services 'creating another mess'
Chula Vista City Manager Maria Kachadoorian is demanding Republic Services meet with the city next week to discuss how the company plans to credit thousands of customers for services not provided during last months work stoppage.
On Wednesday, Kachadoorian sent a letter to the waste hauler demanding a virtual meeting to proactively and timely mitigate any further impacts to the community, read a portion of the memo.
The letter comes after a December strike where about 250 sanitation workers represented by Teamsters Local No. 542 walked off the job to receive better pay and benefits. Employees, who earned $24.60 an hour, sought a $2 per hour pay increase in the first year, followed by $1 in each of the remaining years. The settlement, reached last week, resulting in a workers hourly pay increase of nearly $5 an hour over five years and a $1,000 one-time bonus.
Republic Services said last week that it would handle customer refunds on a case-by-case basis because some customers may have received a different service experience than others.
