Action is needed, certainly. The situation in Gaza is tragic, horribly so. Netanyahu is guilty of crimes against humanity. Demonstrably so. But Pomona College is not going to end the war. Pomona College is not going to make the U.S. stand down and cease supporting Israel -- a move that would be both a foolish and frankly dangerous mistake, in any case.
But youth is impetuous and seeks to force change using its muscle and its physical energy. It's natural, I guess, but it is also counter productive. Across America, protests such as the one at Pomona College angers people, or alienates them from the cause. Those people watching the news clip shown here are more likely to ignore or rail at it, rail against the students, that is.
It may be heretical for me to say this, but the Biden administration knows more about the situation in Gaza than any of the student protesters. The Biden administration knows more about the interconnection of American support for Israel and the defense of our necessary interests in the Middle East than any of the student protesters. I congratulate the protesters for their humanity and their compassion, but feel their public expression of it through violence -- albeit an admittedly low-register violence in this instance -- is counter productive.
