Fontana City Council puts 1 percent sales tax increase on November ballot

The Fontana City Council is placing a 1 percent sales tax increase on the Nov. 5 ballot.

The five-member City Council voted 5-0 to approve the proposed resolution, which could raise about $46 million annually, during the July 9 meeting.

The proposal for a “transactions and use tax for general purposes” would need to be approved by a majority vote of the electorate in the city in order to go into effect, according to the resolution on the agenda.

The tax hike would affect the sale and/or use of all tangible personal property sold at retail in the city, the resolution said.
