Funding Programs Serving Children, Youth, and Families
Proposition J would create an Our Children, Our Families Initiative, led by the mayor and the superintendent of the San Francisco Unified School District, to ensure that funds from previous voter-approved measures are spent effectively.
Argument for: The proposition ensures greater accountability and oversight of previous voter-approved propositions, including the Public Education Enrichment Fund, approved by voters in 2004, and the Student Success Fund, approved in 2022.
Argument against: City Controller Greg Wagner said that if approved, Prop. J would have a significant impact on the cost of government of up to $35 million in fiscal year 2024-25, increasing to up to $83 million in fiscal year 2037-38. The estimated annual staff costs to support the Our Children, Our Families Initiative range from approximately $140,000 to $570,000 for one to three positions in the Department of Children, Youth, and Their Families.
