S.F. mayoral candidates court Asian American voters in Chinatown town hall
The five major candidates for San Francisco mayor made their pitches Thursday to the city’s Asian American voters, a hotly-courted group that could swing this year’s election.
At a town hall hosted by the Asian Pacific Islander Council, the candidates laid out their plans to address problems that acutely affect Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. About 250 people — mostly Asian American community members — attended the town hall, which was the only mayoral candidate forum this election season to offer live Cantonese language interpretation.
Mayor London Breed and her four main challengers, former mayor and supervisor Mark Farrell, nonprofit founder and Levi Strauss heir Daniel Lurie, Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin and Supervisor Ahsha Safaí, sought to win over Asian American voters. The town hall was moderated by MSNBC news anchor Richard Lui and NBC Bay Area reporter Gia Vang.
Asian American voters played a decisive role in recent elections, particularly the 2022 school board recall, and helped Breed get elected in 2018.
