Dean Preston faces moderate challenger in San Francisco's most expensive supervisor race

Since joining the Board of Supervisors in 2019, Dean Preston has won fans on the left for his unapologetic attacks on the real estate industry, calls for police reform and support for a public bank, among other stances.

But the controversial Democratic Socialist has frequently clashed with high-profile Democrats like Mayor London Breed. Now, moderate Democrats and Republicans have set their sights on ousting Preston, who’s built considerable support in District 5, which includes the Tenderloin, Haight-Ashbury and Western Addition.

Preston is facing a tough reelection bid as he faces four moderate candidates: former state Assembly candidate Bilal Mahmood, community organizer Autumn Looijen, drafter Allen Jones and former grocery industry analyst Scotty Jacobs.

The fight has attracted more money than any other supervisor race this election. Candidates and independent committees have raised more than $1.5 million, including matching public financing, with Preston hauling in $559,000 and his closest competitor, Mahmood, bringing in over $480,000.
