Farrell's big-money backers change up strategy

Major backers of former interim San Francisco Mayor Mark Farrell shifted their priorities this summer as he faced increased attacks from his opponents.

The controversial campaign committee Farrell formed to support Proposition D, a measure that would slash the number of commissions in city government, nearly ceased drawing major contributions in early September. At the same time, well-heeled contributors flocked to an independent expenditure committee formed to back Farrell’s mayoral candidacy.

The shift came in early September, just as new polling released by Daniel Lurie’s campaign showed him rising above Farrell. It also came after weeks of criticism swirling around Farrell’s Prop. D committee. Ostensibly formed to support the charter reform measure, Farrell’s opponents have alleged that he was essentially using it to launder funds that would otherwise exceed contribution limits for a mayoral campaign, charges Farrell has adamantly denied.

In a statement, Farrell assured The Examiner he remains committed to securing the passage of Prop. D, which he described as the most important local measure on the ballot this year.
