One dead following fracking accident near Mead

One person is confirmed dead and two people sustained serious injuries Thursday morning following a fracking accident at a rig site in Weld County.

Weld County Sheriff’s Office deputies are on scene investigating the accident. According to initial reports, the death and injuries were caused by a high-pressure water valve that either ruptured or exploded, said agency spokesman Sean Standridge.

The incident occurred at 9:30 a.m. at a rig site off of Weld County Road 9 1/2 just north of Colo. 66 near Mead.

As of 10:15 a.m., Flight for Life was on the ground preparing to transport the two survivors to a nearby hospital, Standridge said.

The operator of the rig has not yet been determined.

The Greeley Tribune will update this story as more details become available.
