Denver’s Kyle Wester nears 90 mph to set world speed record for downhill skateboarding



The time was right. The late summer’s temperature, humidity, wind, just so.

Kyle Wester slipped a speed suit over his leathers, so he could reduce drag and increase aerodynamics. He put new wheels on his board. After a few kicks, he tucked down low on his Santa Cruz longboard and did his thing.

A couple minutes later, still locked in a largely motionless tuck, he was the fastest skateboarder in the world, cruising at 89.41 mph and crushing the previous speed record by almost 9 mph.

“This has been a dream of mine for more than 10 years now. I’ve just been working my way up, getting better and better and finally this came to happen,” the 29-year-old Denver native said of the Aug. 29 record-setting descent.
