As readers know, the state of California factored oddly heavily in the 2018 midterm elections in Colorado. Colorado Republicans attempted to capitalize on the “threat” of Colorado becoming more like the Golden State in all kinds of ways, from the horrors of life in San Francisco to the supposedly wrecked California economy–and, of course, a generous helping of dog-whistle subtext about hippie liberals and their “alternative lifestyles.”

But as it turns out, the states of Colorado and California did have something in common in the 2018 elections. For Republicans in both states, 2018 was an historic wipeout that has left the state’s Republican establishments wondering what the future (if any) looks like. As Politico reports:

In the wake of a near-political annihilation in California that has left even longtime conservative stronghold Orange County bereft of a single Republican in the House of Representatives, a growing chorus of GOP loyalists here say there’s only one hope for reviving the flatlining party: Blow it up and start again from scratch.

That harsh assessment comes as Republicans survey the damage from the devastation of a “blue tsunami” in California which wiped out five GOP-held House seats — with more still threatened — while handing every statewide seat and a supermajority to the Democrats in both houses of the state legislature this week…

For anyone with an understanding of California politics, the idea of the conservative bastion of Orange County failing to send a single Republican back to Congress for 2019 is practically unthinkable. California’s Democratic majorities in the State Assembly and Senate are now supermajorities–a critical hurdle since California requires a two-thirds legislative majority to pass a budget. California’s blue wave, like Colorado’s, delivered a sweep of statewide races to the Democrats.

1. It's the future for

Many more states in the not so distant future for their republican nazi party's demise. Its only making the case even stronger against them , and will create even greater movements to oust them all. Especially because of trump.

2. The GOP definitely needs to die

Whether the GOP will ever be reformed to be resurrected is debatable. Their problem is that they have completely lost their moral compass (assuming they ever had one), in the pursuit of greed at any costs. The oligarchs and corporate monopolists cynically joined with the Christian Taliban domionists to use the culture wars to rile up ignorant and gullible people.

There is a place for sensible conservatism that raises and uses taxes responsibly. That conserves our environment for health and recreation. But this Ayn Rand virtue of selfishess fantasy that all gov is evil has got to go.

We will always have fearful and hateful bigots and racists, but the GOP has got to take responsibility for defeating them in their primaries. Personally, I think that it will take many more election cycles to finally sink in that the vast majority of American people don't like what the GOP is selling.

We need to start asking Republicans why the rest of the world gets universal healthcare, but we don't? Why is it that other countries have 4 to 6 weeks paid vacation, and 6 months paid maternity leave, and free childcare, and retirement with dignity, but we don't have those things? If gthe US is the best country in the world, why can't we have nice things?

the reason we just gave 1.5 trillion dollars to the rich and deregulated the banks and fossil fuel industry, and why we pay 10 times more for health care and prescription drugs than other countries isn't just because those industries pay off our politicians, that is a big part of it, but IMO the answer to your question is that the real culprit is the corporate controlled M$M. I don't bother arguing with Trumpers any more, it's pointless because the M$M has destroyed people's critical thinking, they are brainwashed. When I used to argue with Trumpers I would cut and paste Dwight Eisenhower's farewell address, Ike, a Republican general/president. Ike who said we can choose how we spend our tax dollars, who said we can spend our money on books or bullets, on babies or bombs. I think we have 14 aircraft carriers and the rest of the world has 3. It really is just common sense. We have 5,700 combat troops stationed on our southern border at a cost of 220 million dollars to stop people seeking asylum, who the M$M portrays as an invading horde of you name it. The corporate controlled M$M created Trump, it didn't get him elected president just to make money, it was complicit in propagating his bs narratives. Trump and people like him have fertile soil to survive in. We are arguing over whether Jim Acosta should have his press credentials revoked because he asked tough questions. I remember Helen Thomas who JFK said of, Helen is a nice girl if she would get rid of that pad and pencil. I remember when Helen asked W. what are the real reasons we invaded Iraq, was it for oil, or for Israel? The days of Helen Thomas need to come back, these traitorous greedy bastards need to have a bright light shined on them.

8. Ronald Reagan began the era of not enforcing the anti-trust laws.

You may remember that he busted the air traffic controllers union by firing all of them and bringing in military air traffic controllers. From that time forward, we have seen corporate monopolists consolidating company after company. Buying up small and mid-sized manufacturing companies and shipping the jobs overseas for cheaper labor. What is behind all of this? It is the human vice of unfettered greed. Greed that can never be satisfied. Somewhere, the human virtue of contentment with a middle class life and working for the benefit of all got replaced with Ayn Rand's virtue of selfishness. The greedy want to privatize everything for maximum profit? It is greedy selfishness that is the problem. How many millions of $$$ does it take to be happy? $20M, $50M, $200M, $20B? $200B? What we're enabling is a few, very few pharoahs, while the rest of us drag stone blocks for pennies and nickels.

4. Wait until Trumpers do their taxes

and find out, the forms weren't simplified, and find out that the reason they got a little bit more every paycheck was because their employers deducted less. When Trumpers don't get that big tax return that they used to go to the races with, or to pay their car insurance, what will they say?

I'm on Socialist, Social Security, my taxes didn't change for the worse, I can control my deductions. We on Socialist Social Security have a built in cost of living adjustment, since the cost of living went up 2.8% this year we are all getting a 2.8% raise next year. Hey Trumpers, Mitch McConnell said it, he wants to gut Socialist, Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid to pay for that 1.5 trillion dollar tax cut he just gave to the rich.
