TELLURIDE The day after Thanksgiving, Dr. Jana Eller and Dr. Shiraz Naqvi were seated beside an outdoor fire pit at the base of Telluride Ski Resort, taking a short break from skiing.
The two physicians from Houston had driven more than 18 hours to get here for the holiday weekend, and they were staying (and preparing meals) in a rented home. They traveled with another couple and their kids, colleagues theyve been bubbling with in Houston.
We got a COVID test prior to leaving and will get another when we return, Naqvi said.
The skiing itself doesnt feel much different during the pandemic, Eller said, but the après ski scene is just gone.

(18,838 posts)Goodness you are covered from head to toe a few times over. Even have eye protection. You are the lone skier by yourself and if others are around you are many times over six feet. Wed be so lucky to have our other activities emulate this including grocery shopping.

(649 posts)when they wreck. Now ski patrol has to get up front and close to them. As a patroller, I will have on a mask. Goggles get fogged up quickly when you are accessing /treating someone, so they come off right away. Now say, I have a patient wrapped around a tree without a mask. Yes, I was skiing Friday and because of the distance factor, there were a lot of folks on the hill with no masks, even in the closer quarters of lift lines ( signs said masked were required, but nobody was enforcing that). Sorry for the aside, back to the maskless skier wrapped around a tree. As I approach and start talking to them, that is a good sign that they can talk, My name is..., what happened, I am here to help you. Before I can get any closer, I need you to put this mask on, as I hand them a mask. If they refuse???? Our protocols, like all first responders is to ensure that the scene is safe for us to enter. Basically, NO MASK, no help. That said it is still a case by case issue. Anybody that works as a first responder wants to help that person.
