The biggest change is to the 3rd congressional district. Currently, it forms a massive hook encompassing the entire Western Slope and Pueblo. But the new staff map transforms it into a southern and western district that only reaches as far north as I-70, including Mesa and Eagle counties, and then stretches east past Pueblo to include Crowley, Otero and Las Animas counties.
This change means the Western Slope would be split into two districts, with the northern portion ending up in the 2nd congressional district. Under this configuration, the current third district Representative, Republican Lauren Boebert, who lives in Garfield County, would find herself drawn into CO-2. That potentially sets up a race between her and the CO-2 incumbent, Democrat Joe Neguse.
The state constitution specifically says commissioners can not try to protect the interests of current officeholders as they design the new map.

Neguse is my rep & a good one!

(1,109 posts)A Few Questions:
(1) Can someone(anyone) please explain how 'redistricting' actually works?
(2) Do normal folks congregate within others of their same political ideologies OR are they asked to move to within specific areas so that a group of similar-minded folks live and work together?
(3) In time (as lives evolve) how does re-mapping an area for political reasons serve any useful purpose?
(4) After a 'redistricting' event, are folks forced to 'stay' in that area OR can they move as they find necessary?
(5) Now as folks move from within that re-set area, what purpose does 'redistricting' provide?
Appears (to me at least), that 'redistricting' would always be 'out-of-date'.

(92,668 posts)Population within an area, theoretically. Each district is supposed to have the number of people based on the decennial census. It stays that way until the next census. Each district has its House rep.
If people move, the register in the new district and vote there. Redistricting is the process of adjusting for the changes that occurred in the past ten years according to the census, which is why an accurate count matters.

(27,271 posts)we had Polis for years..another good one. Grand County has been in Boulder's district and the rednecks in my county have been whining about it for years.
I'm happy with remaining in the second district and have written letters and attended meetings on the issue when it appeared we were going to the 3rd... Looks like we're staying put. Yay!!!!
