Yale will 'meaningfully increase' its financial support to New Haven, Salovey says

NEW HAVEN —Yale University will announce plans soon to increase its voluntary contribution to the city, according to university President Peter Salovey.

Salovey made the statement during his introductory remarks at the annual conference of the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance and Abolition. The conference’s focus this year is on Yale’s historical relationship to slavery and racism.

After describing Yale’s historical ties to slavery and plans for a permanent memorial on campus, as well as plans to work more closely with Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Salovey said the university is “also working closely with our home city.”

“A year ago, Mayor Justin Elicker and I established a committee of university and community leaders to jointly evaluate opportunities benefiting New Haven and Yale,” Salovey said. “The committee has identified a number of potential collaborations that we will consider.”
