Connecticut unrolls new ballot tabulators

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — State officials rolled out the first of thousands of new ballot tabulators that will replace aging machines across Connecticut.

Nine towns — Glastonbury, New Britain, Hamden, New Haven, Rocky Hill, South Windsor, Vernon, Southington and Wethersfield — will utilize the new tabulators in this fall’s general election, while the rest will be delivered next year.

Connecticut Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas said the new machines, which are being purchased with $25 million in state funds, represent the first upgrade to Connecticut election equipment in nearly two decades and have been a top request of local election officials.

Officials said the tabulators currently in service are functional, but there have been occasional malfunctions in recent years that have illustrated the need for more modern replacements.
