Van Reportedly Speeding Before Crash On I-84

VERNON — A van that crashed on westbound I-84 Sunday evening, sending more than a dozen people to the hospital and crippling traffic for several hours, was speeding and struck two vehicles before rolling down an embankment, state police said.

The 15-passenger van was full when it went off the road and rolled over near Exit 65 in Vernon about 5:45 p.m.

Two of the passengers, Maria Ovalle, 47, and Jose Peña, 50, were flown by helicopter to Hartford Hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries, police said. Both were in good condition on Monday, a hospital spokeswoman said.
