Some Delaware Republicans push to reinstate death penalty
Republicans in Delaware's General Assembly say they will try to rework Delaware's death penalty law so the punishment can be reinstated.
The state Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled the current law is unconstitutional.
In an "open letter to the Citizens of Delaware" released Friday afternoon, 15 of the 25 Republicans in the Legislature said they will introduce a bill in the next session, which starts in January 2017, that will "restore the ability of Delaware's justice officials to hold those found guilty of breaking our most solemn laws fully accountable for their actions."
"In concert with Delaware's leading police organizations, we maintain that capital punishment can serve as a deterrent, possibly preventing the worst of crimes from ever being committed," the letter says. "We also believe that the death penalty is the only appropriate punishment for some offenses of such a heinous nature that no other sanction would be adequate."
