The family that owned her had been in temporary housing in Ohio. When they were able to get housing back in NOLA, they couldn’t bring their dog. My friend was volunteering at the shelter the morning they dropped her off. The entire family was in tears. My friend couldn’t take it. He adopted their dog on the spot, then gave them his name and address and told them to write when they got settled

Heidi died two years ago. She was probably 17 or so. She had a great life, and my friend kept in close touch with the family and sent regular updates and pictures. The family got back on their feet and were able to move and have a dog again, but they never forgot Heidi or the kind gentleman who rescued her for them and loved her just as much as they did.
