Period of snow possible early Sunday morning in D.C. area.

A coating to a couple inches seems most probable.

Our spell of springlike weather will come to a sudden halt Saturday night as a cold front barges through the region, setting the stage for a possible light snowfall early Sunday morning. Right now this doesn’t look like a big deal for several reasons:

Air and ground temperatures will initially be too mild for the snow to stick.

Most of the snow will fall while people are sleeping, mainly between the predawn hours and sunrise Sunday. Precipitation may begin as rain or a rain-snow mix.

The duration of the event appears to be short, ending by midmorning Sunday and well before Super Bowl festivities. It shouldn’t affect school, government and business operations Monday.

Overall precipitation amounts should be rather modest.

All of that said, there is the possibility of a short predawn burst of snow amid freezing temperatures. That combination could cause some slick spots if you’re heading out early to midmorning Sunday.

Right now we think most areas will see a coating to a couple inches of snow from this event, though if temperatures are slow to cool down, no accumulation is a possibility (bust scenario). Alternatively, if temperatures cool quickly, and there’s a localized burst of heavier snow, someone could see on the order of 2 to 4 inches (boom scenario).

On Friday we’ll release an accumulation forecast map, but for now here are our snowfall probabilities for the District:

Chance of at least 1 inch: 40 percent
Chance of at least 3 inches: 10 percent

((RIGHT now, it's 55 degrees, mostly sunny, here in southern MD.))
