Florida Democratic Rep. Murphy won't seek reelection

ORLANDO, FLA. -- U.S. Rep. Stephanie Murphy on Monday announced she will not seek reelection next year.

The Florida Democrat, a leader of the centrist Blue Dog Coalition and member of the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection, said she is retiring from Congress to spend more time with her family.

"Public service is not without personal sacrifice, and as a mom of two young children, my time away from them has been hard. For them. For me. And for our family," she said in a video statement.

Murphy, 43, was first elected in 2016, becoming the first Vietnamese American woman and second Vietnamese American in Congress, after defeating 12-term Republican John Mica in a central Florida district that includes part of Orlando.

I think this is less a sign that she expects a “red wave” than that it looks like she’s been drawn out of a district.

Murphy has said that she thinks she could win in any of the proposed variations for District 7. Florida went through 3 years of lawsuits after the 2010 census and the Republican legislature has been more circumspect this time around. My own guess is that Murphy doesn't want to serve in the House minority, especially after serving on the January 6 commission. And she does have young kids. Her name and record will serve her well if she returns to the political arena.
