This is a good commentary by the leader of the Orange Classroom Teachers Association. He points out many of the struggles that FL teachers face.

DeSantis likes to say our beginning salaries are great but he overlooks the FACT that overall salaries are awful. If you are thinking about teaching in FL the DON’T! Change your mind, change your college major, or change the state you want to live in

Our public education system is in crisis.
The workload has dramatically increased and it’s more difficult every year to pay bills on a teacher salary. Teachers are leaving the profession in droves and many who remain have second and third jobs. Teachers also flee because of the constant attacks against their character, being called groomers, indoctrinators and “woke.”
State laws regulating teacher pay have caused teachers with many years of experience to be paid nearly the same as brand-new teachers. These conditions also severely drive down recruitment. Many don’t want to start a career where people are treated this way.

Our state legislators and governor need to simplify laws regulating teacher pay. In 2010, there was one law that governed teacher pay. There are now over 20. This burden needs to end and Florida needs to adequately fund public education. Why isn’t our governor embarrassed that Florida ranks 48th in the nation in average public school teacher pay? He claims to have been an advocate for teachers, but the data contradicts him.

3. Yes. Our librarians in our schools are paid as teachers and so their pay stinks too!

But studies show that having a librarian helps improve student achievement. Imagine having well-paid and highly qualified librarians. Oh wait. That would mean well educated kids which the GOP doesn’t want!

4. San Diego laid off everyone over 5 years

and the teachers had too cover their work as well as their own for the same pay, which was already low to start with. The librarians, nurses, counselors, translators, tech, support staff, custodial staff, etc were all was cut by 2/3. Teachers had to assume those jobs as well as often being a substitute parent. Teachers give kids their own money out of their own mouths by feeding some students and supplying them with school supplies.. Everyone always knew teachers got shitty pay for their education and experience as professionals compared with similar professions and accepted the situations for decades. The way teachers are treated sucks. Little respect, long hours, etc are not fun, especially when you are told that no matter how much you accomplish it will never be enough. When Deathsantis add more BS to the pile it is adding insult to injury. A friend was going to transfer to teaching in FL to be nearer to his mother. They both changed their minds about 2 years ago due to the governor. Smart move on their part.
