A 17-year-old special needs student from Matanzas High School in Flagler County has been accused of violently attacking a teacher's aide, leaving her unconscious. The incident occurred after the paraprofessional took away the student's Nintendo game.
The school district has decided not to share any information about the teachers aide's current condition due to privacy concerns. However, there is surveillance footage of the incident, which Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly watched.
"Quite frankly, it was shocking," he said.
According to investigators, the student chased the teacher's aide into the hallway after she took his video game away. The report states he pushed her with such force that she was knocked five to six feet into the air, causing her to lose consciousness.
"This could have been a homicide," Staly said. "When you push people down like that, they hit their head, you never know the outcome."

(21,952 posts)While I do not know ALL the details of this story, I do know that special needs children can be prone to bouts of violence.
"Locking him up" is NOT what this situation needs.

(3,991 posts)Then what does it need? A time out? A hug? Im serious. He couldve killed her. This was a vicious and brutal unprovoked attack. If this special needs student acts like this for a video game, how will he act the next time something happens? Does he have a history of acts like this? Some people just need to be removed from society. We lock up sex criminals after their sentences are done via civil commitment proceedings. Maybe there needs to be a process put in place for incidents like this too.
The sad truth is some people are just bad. Short of putting them all on an island like Lord of the Flies and letting them fend for themselves, I dont know what to do. I dont know if this person had a horrible childhood, what his special need was, or anything else. If he is on medications, who knows. All I have to go on is a video of savage attack from behind on a teacher. Thank God there is video. Lock him up and protect society
. Or wait until he kills someone next time?

(3,991 posts)I respect your ability to be restrained (I will admit I wasn't when I typed my reply). I would like to hear your suggestions for what would work then? I'm always willing to listen to alternative views and have been known to change my position on topics when I learn more about something.

The law orders that they be educated in regular classrooms unless its proven impossible or someone gets severely injured and force school systems to mainstream these children. It sometimes seems like the kids with violent tendencies have more rights than the students and teachers that they endanger. School districts are not equipped to provide service to possibly dangerous mentally ill children.

(3,991 posts)Mainstreaming doesnt work. I agree fully, our politically correct society about catering to special needs has swung the pendulum too far. Ive read countless posts on Reddit and Quora posts from parents who are frustrated because their kids are stuck in classes with a disruptive special needs student who disrupts the class and monopolizes the staffs time.
Im all for helping people reach their potential. But not at the expense of the 99% of students trying to learn.
