Election tech company takes 'full responsibility' for Primary night outage

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV/Gray Florida Capital Bureau) - Elections technology systems company VR Systems is taking “full responsibility” for Supervisor of Elections websites going down Tuesday night. Most county Supervisor of Election websites went down when polls for Florida’s primary election.

“No one likes to see the word ‘elections’ and any kind of problem,” Aegis Biz Tech owner Blake Dowling said.

The problem only affected websites hosted by VR Systems, which happens to be most of Florida’s county Supervisor of Elections. The Tallahassee-based company said logging, used as a security measure, caused the problem. It said increased traffic stressed the system slowing websites to a standstill. Aegis Biz Tech owner Blake Dowling said it’s hard to predict these types of outages.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s Ticketmaster or elections, we can all be caught off guard. Volume equates downtown in some instances,” Dowling said.

The reason most companies “get caught off guard” is because they lacked imagination in planning and didn’t invest enough in their capabilities. Pathetic. IT failure can be another form of election interference and is unacceptable.
