Florida’s HD 113 is a Biden +12; D +17 district. And yet the current representative is Vicki Lopez, a Republican who won in 2022 by just 825 votes. Because of the Byzantine nature of Miami politics, she is unbelievably supported by the Miami-Dade County Commissioner, a Democrat, the South FL AFL-CIO, and the Miami Teachers’ Union. And her opponent, Democrat Jackie Gross-Kellogg has not received a dime from the Florida Democratic Party. On the other hand, Vicki Lopez has “raised and spent $170K to defend HD 113 seat from comparatively underfunded challenger.” In total, she raised $765,500 between November 2022 and September 21, 2024, and has $567,500 remaining.

“Comparatively underfunded” is the understatement of the 2020s — Jackie has raised $15,000 from individual contributions, while Lopez’s contributors are primarily from the Republican party and corporate interests, including telecoms and for-profit prison company, the GEO Group, which gave her a $7,000 check.

Six races, including this one, can eliminate Florida Republican’s supermajority in the Florida House.

1. Is Jackie out there campaigning hard against this nasty republican?

Miami is a strange place for politics. Unfortunately Fla dems are unable to support all candidates with financing or a lot of backing at times. Although our current Chair is the best we have had for us in years. Perhaps things will turn more blue since the last election 2 years ago esp in this area where we lost a lot of ground to republicans.
