A veteran incumbent and a nonprofit consultant in her first campaign face off in a race for the Seminole County School Board that is nonpartisan but has drawn the attention of both Democrats and Republicans.
Abby Sanchez, 57, of Longwood, is the incumbent District 3 board member. A former elementary school teacher, Sanchez was first elected in 2016 and serves as the board’s chairperson. She has three children who are all graduates of Seminole County Public Schools. The board, Sanchez said, needs her steady leadership as the district seeks to tackle issues such as school safety and increasing teacher pay.
Stephanie Arguello, 38, also of Longwood, is a self-employed nonprofit consultant and former Director of Community Health at AdventHealth. A single-mother of a Lake Brantley High School student, Arguello said that the board needs a parent who has school-age children and a non-traditional family perspective......
Though school board elections are nonpartisan, the Republican Party of Seminole County named Sanchez their “preferred” candidate, and the Seminole County Democratic Party did the same for Arguello. The Florida Democratic Party has also donated to Arguello’s campaign and helped pay for digital advertising and campaign texts, according to her campaign finance records.
Sanchez was a registered Republican but is now registered without a party. Arguello is a registered Democrat, according to voter roll records.
