Legislation filed to regulate adoptions, sales of certain dog breeds in Georgia

Is it a war on dogs? Or dog owners? That is difficult to discern when considering recently filed House Bill 313.

Democrat lawmaker Keisha Waites wants to make it mandatory for dogs owners to provide paperwork and statistics on dog bite frequency and litigation costs during a transfer of ownership – whether it be through sale, adoption, or gift.

The paperwork would include information outlined by the Georgia Department of Health and would be provided online annually, free of charge. While there are loose parameters around the type of information to be provided, Waites specifically calls for the document to include:

any statistics pertaining to injuries to humans caused by dogs which it deems relevant to inform the public of the risks related to dog bites

data from the previous year regarding the reported number of humans bitten by dogs in the United States;

data on the total medical costs related to injuries caused by dogs in the United States

the total amount of damages awarded to victims of dog bites or dog attacks in the United States

1. As we know, it's not the pup, it's the owner *sigh*

One of the sweetest dogs I ever met was a pitbull who belonged to one of the supervisors in my office. She was a brindle, pretty dog, and quite friendly. I worked late, so I was friendly with the cleaning crew. And if this supervisor came in, he sometimes brought his dog. If he wasn't in his office when it was time to clean, and the dog was, the guy who vacuumed refused to go in there. Nobody ever said a thing, but I noticed. So what I'd do was just go in and sit with my arm around the dog. The cleaning guy came in, did his vacuuming, and went on his way. I don't know if anybody ever knew or noticed, but I did, so I felt I solved a problem.

I also share a vet with this guy and his dog. One time, I happened to have an appointment when the guy was leaving - alone. So I asked the vet and it turns out Rascal had passed on. I felt terrible for him, knew he had been through so much with his beloved dog. He loved that dog and she loved him, loved everybody, actually. And she was a pitbull, but was brought up with love.

2. Knowing Georgia...

...I would think the laws would block Teh Gayz from adopting dogs. We can't allow Bowser to be brought up except in a Traditional Family, can we?

3. I disagree with anything that makes adopting pets more difficult

Lord knows there are far too many dogs and cats in shelters already, making it more difficult to adopt them is certainly not going to help the situation.
