Norfolk Southern to build new headquarters in Georgia

Transportation giant Norfolk Southern announced they would be building a new headquarters in Georgia bringing 850 jobs with a $575 million investment.

The railway and transportation company held a press conference with Governor Nathan Deal and Mayor of Atlanta Kesha Lance Bottoms. Norfolk Southern’s new campus will house the company’s headquarters, dispatch operations, operations and service support center, crew management center, corridor operations offices, national customer service center, administrative functions, marketing department, and police communications center.

The new headquarters will be located in the Midtown area known as “The Gulch.” Atlanta’s economic development team heavily recruited Norfolk Southern, Invest Atlanta, but Norfolk Southern was also being swooned by Norfolk, Virginia’s mayor to keep their headquarters in Virginia, but the incentive packages and available infrastructure in Atlanta sealed the deal.

The Atlanta City Council approved a $2 billion public financing package last month to the developer group CIM to develop “The Gulch” property in Midtown. Norfolk Southern already owned land near “The Gulch” property. Atlanta city’s economic development agency said the new headquarters could bring an economic impact of $811 million and bring along with it a $600 lease purchase bond.
