Georgia Clean Air Force is FORCING my daughter to come home for Thanksgiving!

My daughter was working in south Florida when the pandemic hit and she lost her job. She moved in with family friends till she finds a job.

The car she is driving is in my name and the tag must be rewed by November 26th (Thanksgiving Day). Since she is not in school (graduated from FSU) and lost her job she does not qualify for an Out of Area Emissions Exemption. If we transfer the title so she can get a FL tag the fees will be more than the value of the car and she will have to get her own car insurance.

I've tried writing Gov. Kemp's office, wrote numerous emails and made countless calls but all I get is "sorry, no exemption"

My other daughter lives in an apartment at UGA. She'll be coming home so she's not there by herself since most of her friends are going home.

That's THREE separate families staying in the same house for an extended period of time!

All this as the CDC recommends against holiday travel!!

The governor allowed kids to get driver’s licenses without taking the driving test but won’t give an out of area emission exemption during a pandemic that has killed 250,000 Americans!!!

I'm furious!!!!

1. If she lives in Fl she needs Fl tags

don't compare the fee to the dollar value of the car - the value is more than numerical at this point. Pay the fees and transfer the title.

She would like to get out of FL but it's hard to move during a pandemic.

The added expense of getting car insurance would be another financial hurdle.

Regardless, an exemption is only temporary till the car returns to the area. The government still gets the money.

Additionally, I was upset when I waited in line to get my emissions tested and the man doing the testing did not wear a mask.

3. See, this is why I never had any kids ;)

Rose I've let my registration lapse on my car so many freaking times in my life it's not even funny. Granted only in 2 states (CA, AZ) but in lots of areas in those states. I've never been pulled over for tags unless they were at least 5 months expired.

And when you do it's a fix-it ticket that costs like 25 bucks or something (and of course you have to then get the tags which will cost a bit more than if you're renewed on time as well).

If it were me given the totality, I'd probably roll with bad tags. It's not big of a deal getting pulled over with them. Not like a suspended license. AND I bet cops in general are being cooler about it right now.

4. Have her drive the car home and test it. If the car isn't worth retagging - a couple of hundred ...

bucks or so, maybe it shouldn't be on the road. If the issue is the cost of her paying for insurance, retag it in FLA under your name (you may need a PoA), and you keep paying insurance.

The value of the car is hyperbole cause of the stickers, wet dog smell and torn upholstery. It's a 2006 Toyota Matrix with 180,000 miles and still runs great. I have no doubt it will pass the emissions test but it will create more emissions getting here.

It's her returning home during a pandemic and having a 'threesome' that is the issue.

It's worth getting the title straightened in FLA. If she can't afford insurance as the owner, give her a power of attorney to register it in FLA under your name and continue paying insurance.

As much of a jerk as Kemp is (and he's big 'un), I get why GA doesn't want to exempt her - how many thousands of GA grad out there in her shoes might there be? Covid is a tide that's lowered everyone's boat. Especially if there's no intention of bringing the car back to GA.
