Piedmont University's name change from Piedmont College now official

Demorest -- Piedmont College officially changed its name to Piedmont University this week.

The change was unanimously approved by the school’s board of trustees last year and as of Monday, it was official. Piedmont University President James Mellichamp said that the move will more accurately represent the school.

“We're really not liberal arts undergraduate college any longer. We haven't been for some time and think the board was aware of that,” said Mellichamp.

In rankings from U.S. News and World Report, Piedmont University was included among comprehensive regional universities rather than liberal arts colleges.

The school is currently regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award degrees from baccalaureate up to doctorate degrees and they have already received permission for the name change from their external organizations including accreditor and the state of Georgia.
