State Rep. Kip Smith charged with DUI in Buckhead

Republican state Rep. Kip Smith was arrested early Friday morning in Buckhead and charged with DUI, according to an Atlanta police report obtained by Channel 2 Action News.

Smith, a 29-year-old lawmaker from Columbus, was pulled over after leaving Hal’s restaurant on Old Ivy Road and allegedly running a red light while traveling southbound on Peachtree Road, the police report said.

Efforts to contact Smith were unsuccessful Friday night.

Atlanta police Officer Z.A. Kramer, who was following the lawmaker’s 1998 gold four-door Jaguar XJ8, said the traffic light had just turned red when Smith went through the intersection at Pharr Road.

GA Politician Supports Drug Testing For Welfare Recipients, Also Charged With DUI

While Smith has not yet been found guilty of the DUI, it is ironic to see someone who is extremely concerned about drug use among welfare recipients run into some alcohol-related problems of his own. Smith and other supporters of H.B. 464 have argued that drug testing would prevent state money from going to drug abusers and potentially ease budget concerns by reducing welfare costs. Many members have opposed the bill on grounds of a violation of privacy, which was exemplified by Scott Holcomb's H.B. 677, which would require Georgia politicians to undergo the same drug testing as the welfare recipients, since politicians are also receiving state funds. Neither bill has yet been voted in.

2. let me get this straight its only OK when a rich Representative does drugs, not poor people

personally i Don't mind the Idea of Welfare Recipients getting drug tested (giving addicts drug money wont help them), but i can also agree for our representatives.

It always turns out to be the ones doing it that scream the loudest about it, all holier than thou like. The fact is, most welfare recipients are NOT on drugs; the good ol' boys are dog whistling with this bill, that's their MO and it works very well for them down South.
