So the newcomer here "stole" the name. From George II.

Wikipedia says:

English settlers arrived in the 1730s, led by James Oglethorpe. The name "Georgia", after George II of Great Britain, dates from the creation of this colony.


Is it better than Oglethorpe? Maybe. The latter certainly would be unambiguous. Ray Charles probably wouldn't have liked it. Props to Brother Ray!

And both started in the 1950s. Of course 200 from the state versus 100,000 from the country....but still.
