Former Chicago Mayor Jane Byrne has died
Former Mayor Jane Byrne died Friday morning.
Byrne had stunned the citys political establishment in 1979 when she became the first female mayor by toppling an incumbent backed by the fabled and still formidable Democratic machine.
Byrne, who gradually faded from public view after losing a reelection bid in 1983, died Friday morning, her daughter Kathy Byrne said.
More to come.

name the Circle Interchange after her recently, changing the spaghetti junction that connects the Dan Ryan, the Kennedy, and the Eisenhower expressways to the "Jane Byrne Interchange." Somehow, it seems like an insult to me.
RIP, Mayor Byrne.

I liked Mayor Byrne for the 'Taste of Chicago', and I believe, first in Chicago to march in the 'Gay Pride Parade' and 'Chicagofest'. She lived in Cabrini Green for three weeks to bring attention to the high crimes there. After that, Mayor Daley tore down all of those high rise project buildings and moved all of those high crime constituents all over the city and therefore you hear about the crime that's going on in the city of Chicago (thanks again Mayor Daley ).
Byrne tried to run for a second term, but lost out to our first black Mayor, Harold Washington (a true Liberal) in 1983 and again in 1987. That election bought to town a young, fresh faced, Barack Obama.
