Belleville men burned on the job get $18.5 million settlement, lawyers say

Two Belleville men will get a $18.5 million settlement after they were injured in a flash fire during a derailment cleanup in Kentucky in 2012, according to lawyers for the men.

The workers, employees of RJ Corman Derailment Services of Nicholasville, Ky., were hurt during a hazardous materials cleanup near West Point, Ky., in October 2012, according to Chicago-based Clifford Law Offices. Tony Carillo, 38, and Greg Powers, 28, were badly burned in the incident, their lawyers said.

The men sued CSX Transportation, Paducah & Louisville Railway Co. and the Center for Toxicology and Environmental Health, saying reasonable precautions could have prevented their injuries. The suit was dismissed Monday after the settlement was reached.

The men were also represented by Tad Thomas of Louisville, Ky., and Brad Badgley of Belleville.
