Time capsule found sealed in Springfield YWCA's 1912 cornerstone

A cornerstone time capsule revealed during the demolition of the YWCA building in Springfield is thought to contain a roll of members and the names of more than 200 young girls honored during a 1911 fundraising campaign for the structure.

Whether other items might be in the cornerstone placed in June 1912 remains a mystery for now.

The cornerstone is in storage with the city Office of Public Works while officials consult experts on the proper way to open the capsule, Public Works Director Mark Mahoney said in an email on Monday.

"It has been secured in our facility at a safe place until we obtain professional guidance on how to open, view and secure the documents in a manner to protect them," Mahoney said.
