https://capitolfax.com/2018/05/09/hippies-are-gonna-make-us-kill-all-our-dogs/If Illinois legalizes marijuana for recreational use, law enforcement officials fear job losses for hundreds of officers specifically, the four-legged ones.
Agencies spend thousands of dollars and months of training to teach their dogs how to sniff out and alert officers to the presence of marijuana, heroin, cocaine and other drugs. If pot use becomes legal, the dogs would likely either have to be retrained which some handlers say is impossible or impractical or retired. [ ]
Training a K-9 can take anywhere from eight to 16 weeks and cost between $3,000 to $5,000, not including the time commitment, overtime costs or advanced training. Depending on the dogs breed, training and purpose, the price of an animal can range anywhere from $8,000 to $16,000 each. [ ]
Because many K-9s are trained not to be social so that their work wont be affected, Larner said a number of dogs would likely have to be euthanized.
This is some bullshit but no surprise as pot is a business model for cops, lawyers, prisons and prison guards....lord what fucking idiots and stupid ass statements to make.

(1,112 posts)They can still find other drugs. How is this a problem? Maybe we shouldnt be using dogs when we have other effective methods to detect contraband.
And i have never heard of a k-9 unit being euthanized after retirement. But if they are killed...holy shit! There's a story!

(17,280 posts)First they say "they want to take our guns" - and then they say they'll have to kill their dogs.
Much tougher to kill 'em without guns.................
But seriously, I've seen good examples of the K9 efforts - can't believe they're gonna' cry because they don't have to "sniff out" Mary Jane. They can still use them for that purpose in high school locker searches, right?

(18,300 posts)..those dogs are worth so much $$$$ ...what you stated for the cost is cheap from what Ive seen of other drug dogs. Most the dogs are homed with real human families when not working so they are very well socialized...but like service dogs.. they know when they are at work and when its play time.

(15,805 posts)These are sniffer dogs, not attack dogs and they will still do their job, alerting to all the substances they were trained to seek. It the handle isn't smart enough to walk away from the marijuana and keep searching, then maybe he should be euthanized.
A dog handler wouldn't take on a dog that wasn't safe to take home and live with his family. Many working dogs are trained not to be social when they are on the job. Guide dogs, assistance dogs, search dogs, hunting dogs, rescue dogs, racing dogs, competition dogs, all learn the difference between work and play. Sometimes all it takes is a command, or getting out their harness, vest or removing their working collar and lead to release them, and they instantly become happy family pets.
Shame on those cops! People like that don't deserve to own a dog.
